Owensboro Health: Kate's Story
She had dreamed of dancing Marie in the Nutcracker since she was four. Then came a torn ACL, and a long way back that happened right here at home.
The challenge
Show care close to home without saying it.
Owensboro Health wanted families to know that great orthopedic and sports medicine care doesn't require a drive to Nashville. Kate's sister had made that drive over and over. Kate never had to.
So we let Kate tell it, and let the stage carry the feeling.
Our approach
Motion, then stillness, then motion again.
The film opens in fast, rising cuts on the Riverpark Center stage, then drops into one full beat of silence. The hospital that follows is shot locked off and quiet, the opposite of how a dancer moves through the world.
Recovery builds the energy back, from PT in the corner of the studio to a turn, then a leap. Archival footage of her real performance as Marie intercuts with ours, so the audience knows it really happened.
“After the show was done, I just found myself standing up and clapping. Because I knew what she'd been through.”
Dr. Brown, Owensboro Health

How the story works
Six moments, built around one person.
Every film we make starts with a character before a plot. Kate wanted something clear, had a story only she could tell, and had every reason to get back. From there, our story process gives the film its shape.
Hook
Fast, rising cuts of Kate on stage. We meet her in motion, doing the thing she loves most.
Conflict
A torn ACL, and a dream she has held since she was four suddenly out of reach.
Initiation
She chooses to fight her way back, with care that is ten minutes away instead of hours.
Journey
Surgery, then PT, then a turn, then a leap. Small wins and hard days, each one earned.
Resolution
Kate dances Marie in the Nutcracker. Her surgeon is in the audience, on his feet.
Jab
She is studying nursing now, and plans to come home. The care she received becomes the care she gives.
Photography
Stills from the stage.
